The Hudson River has been used since the Native American’s settled here in 10,000BC. It has since been enriched by many different explorers, artists, writers, industrialists and tourists. The River mouth was first sailed past in 1524 by Veranzzano from Europe. In 1609, Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch, first sailed the length of the River to Albany. Soon after the growth began with developments in New Amsterdam (Manhattan), Rondout (Kingston) and Beverwyck (Albany).
The River originates on the slopes of Mt. Marcy, the highest mountain in the Adirondacks. The Hudson River began to industrialize with the opening of the Erie Canal and building of the locks to the great lakes and Lake Champlain. The river is tidal to the dams and locks near Albany / Troy. Industrialization has decreased over the past century, as transportation needs have changed. Currently, tourism and water frontage is being revitalized to take advantage of such a beautiful area…
